This past Saturday I stood in my parents kitchen talking with my mom. We were discussing unhappiness and why sometimes life can be tougher than it is enjoyable. My mom and I are one in the same when it comes to our philosophy on life. It should be fun more often than it sucks!
Being an ambitious guy, I tend to get life out of whack by pursuing, working non-stop, and getting caught up on minutiae. My mom and I were trying to come up with a way to enjoy life even while aggressively chasing something significant like business success, fitness, becoming debt free, school, or raising children. An applicable way to simplify the thinking that applies to any area in life. For goals or aspirations that require your focused time and a lot of energy and could potentially knock your life out of balance if not managed.
I understand that life is never truly balanced for long, but to me, it should be fun more than it sucks!
Below is what I came up with and has been something I’ve been repeating to myself daily.
Be enthusiastic. – Make a choice to be excited about your life no matter what is going on in it. We can’t always control our circumstances but we can always control our attitude.
Do what you want. – If what you’re doing is not what you want to do, you need to focus on why you’re doing it. You know that in the gym for example in order to gain muscle, you must experience pain. If you’re focusing on the pain rather than the gain, you’re focused on the wrong thing. Do what you want, and do it for the reason you want to do it.
Don’t worry about what others think. – Everyone voices their opinion now-a-days. What kind of life can you live if you’re always worried about what others think? The only opinion that matters is yours. Don’t worry about the haters, you’ll always have them. They’re probably just jealous, but don’t let their opionions stop you from being true to yourself.
So, in order to enjoy life everyday just be enthusiastic, do what you want, and don’t worry about what others think.
